Voyager

Voyager is an instrumental composition I wrote and recorded as a solo project besides my band.

Some background

Voyager-1 launch
It was inspired by NASA’s Voyager program who consisted of two twin probes being sent to space for exploration purposes in the late seventies. They sent back to earth wonderful images of other planets of our systems which were mostly unknown at that time. Their main targets were Saturn an Jupiter.

At this time, Voyager 1 has left the solar system. It is officially the most distant human-made object in the universe and still continues to work. We can still receive signals and data from it several hours a day. Ain’t that romantic ??

When I was a kid, my dictionary featured a map of the solar system that I liked to look at and dream. Amongst the planets were two trajectories marked “Voyager-1″ and “Voyager-2″. I did not exactly know what it meant at this time, but thinking about this as a voyage path was ticking my imagination. Later I would learn a bit more about this odyssey from various documents, and recently thought that I could write some music inspired by it.

The Piece

Voyager-1

I read about the project’s history in books and on the internet, and then sat in front of my keyboard to find the first ideas. I imagined this voyage and let the music come to me naturally. Some themes as the solo piano and some leads came quickly, and I ordered all these chronologically, from the launch to the heliosphere.

Even if it is a single composition, I have defined some parts:

  • 0:00 – Take Off
  • 3:30 – Leaving Gravity
  • 9:20 – Gas Giants
  • 11:30 – Termination Shock
